Conducting an Effective Job Interview
The job interview is one the most important part of the recruitment process. It is the only time when you can have a long conversation with a candidate and explore whether they are able and willing to do the job. It is also a time for you to assess if he or she will fit well into your company’s culture. The job interview offers you a better sense of the candidate’s personality and character much more than reading a CV or an email from the candidate.
No matter how busy you are, always find time to prepare for the interview. The job interview is a chance for you to impress the candidate and increase the likelihood of the candidate accepting the job offer at a later stage should you and your hiring team find the candidate suitable.
Areas to include in your interview preparation
Communicating with candidates
When inviting candidates for interview, what information should you share with them? If you require them to bring along copies of references, educational certificates etc, include this information in your email interview invitation to them.
Decide where the interviews will be held and book the chosen meeting room in advance. Ensure that the room will be clean and tidy to leave the candidate with a positive impression of your company.
Length of interview
How long do you estimate the initial interview would last? It is advisable to give the candidate an estimate of how long the interview might take.
Choice of interviewers and style of interview
How many people will interview the candidate in the first round? Might it be just HR and/or the hiring manager? Should it be a panel interview?
Number of times a candidate will be interviewed
Should the candidate be interviewed once before an offer is made? Generally for mid to senior level positions, there may be a second or third interview, so that the interviewers and candidate can get to know each other better.
Types of interview
If a face-to-face interview is not possible, will there be an interview over the phone or via video conferencing? A face-to-face interview is always a preferred option since you can observe the body language of the candidate.
